When you purchased your new vehicle, did the car lot, or the bank/credit union tell you that you must carry "full coverage" on it? We all use the term "full coverage", even I have let the phrase slip out a time or two. However; in all actuality there really is no such thing as "full coverage". Some night when you are wide awake, and trying to find a way to fall asleep, read your auto insurance policy. That booklet of legal jargon that makes most peoples head spin in confusion. You will not find the phrase "full coverage" anywhere.

The main problem with the phrase, is that it means different things to different people. To some, when they say "full coverage" they only want the least amount of coverage that is required by law, and by the lending institution. To others, it means they want it all. They want roadside assistance, towing, the absolute lowest deductible, or no deductible if possible, the highest liability limits, etc.

So, when you tell your agent you want "full coverage" he/she should take the time to ask you what that means to you. If they don't, how do you know they have your interests in mind?
</a10:content>

What is Uninsured Motorist?

Every day someone asks me what "Uninsured Motorist" coverage is. Some people think that if they add "Uninsured Motorist" coverage to their auto insurance policy, it means that anyone can drive the vehicle. Others, instead think that it will fix their vehicle if they are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. In reality, neither of these has anything to do with "Uninsured Motorist" coverage.

In Oklahoma "Uninsured Motorist" coverage is an optional coverage you can purchase as part of your automobile insurance policy. This coverage will pay for the medical bills of you and/or your passengers if you are involved in a motor vehicle collision that is not your faultwhen the at fault party does not have any, or have enough insurance to cover your (and your passenger's) medical bills. In Oklahoma, "Uninsured Motorist" coverage does not provide any physical damage coverage for your vehicle.

A lot of people now ask me how this is different from "Medical Payments". That is a longer discussion I'll tackle at a later time. Let's just say that "Uninsured Motorist" must have a collision to trigger the coverage, where "Medical Payments" does not.
</a10:content>
